Internal Liberation: Examining Your Experience as a White Man with Anger
October 26, 2020 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm CDT
This month we will continue exploring the topic of white male patriarchal violence, with a specific focus on the intersection of whiteness, masculinity, anger and violence.
Anger is an emotion that can be weaponized by individuals, by our communities, and by our broader society to control and oppress BIPOC and other marginalized communities. But it doesn’t have to be that way, sometimes anger is a healthy response. Our focus then will be both on incidents in our pasts in which we have used our anger as a suppressive force within ourselves and toward others, and exploring healthy ways to express anger.
Talking about violence has the potential to bring up many difficult emotions. Know that for whatever you are feeling, you are not alone. For this meeting, we will continue to offer a thirty minute conversation slot after our main portion for anyone who wishes to continue processing their feelings or experiences. If that is not enough, we are also going to be offering one on one follow up phone calls for anyone who is interested.
THEME: Examining the ways that anger perpetuates violence against ourselves, our communities, and our society.
GUIDING QUESTIONS: What happens in your body when you get angry? When have you lost control of your anger? Have you ever used your anger to control another person or prevent an undesired outcome? What impact did that have on your relationships? How can you be more present with the emotions underlying anger? What does healthy anger look like to you?
***We are in need of a few small group facilitators for this meeting. If you are interested and available, please go ahead and reply to me with your name.***
We are looking forward to seeing you all and joining in a thoughtful discussion.
